ST. PETERSBURG, Fla

. – The U.S. Army Contracting Command, Rock Island, Ill., has awarded General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems a contract valued at $9.3 million for the first production orders of a five-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract for BLU-109 penetrator bomb bodies and components. The contract has the potential value of $193 million if all orders are completed.

The BLU-109 is an improved 2,000 lb hard target penetrator warhead used by the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy. Its single-piece, forged casing is made of high-grade. In response to the increased demand, the Army Contracting Command has contracted General Dynamics to establish a second source production capability for BLU-109 bodies and components.

“This second source BLU-109 line provides our customer with a vital resource at a time of growing operational demands, eliminating the potential of a single-point production failure. This production capability will provide the Air Force and Navy with additional resources and maintain its critical industrial base,” said Dan Paul, vice president and general manager of Precision Systems for General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems.
