We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Pipe Shop. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for J1 to J4 Pipefitters (5 positions).

Shift : ALL

Security Clearance: No Clearance

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)

The Pipefitters are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality and in a professional manner.

POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training/Experience)

  • Reliable transportation.
  • Basic stick ruler measurements.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Work a job with general supervision and to be able to complete small tasks.
  • Knowledge of various testing and obstructed flows.
  • Knowledge of installing various pipe hangers (Type 1 and Type 2).
  • Torch safety.
  • Basic blanking and tagging knowledge.
  • Basic knowledge of ship design and layout.
  • Familiarity with WAFs.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  • Must be familiar with safety regulations and competent person tickets.

GUIDELINES FOR PIPEFITTER

JOURNEYPERSON 4 (Pipefitter)

    1. Read and interpret blue prints/sketches and install all piping systems aboard ship.
    2. Perform shop prefab on piping systems using sketches/templates developed from blue prints and ship check.
    3. Knows and understands tag out procedures for piping systems using sketches templates developed from blue prints prior to working on ships piping system. Be able to accomplish tag out of systems safe for work IAW work authorization form (WAF).
    4. Be able to sil-braze (Grades 3,4 and 5)
    5. Knowledgeable on pipe bending and able to bend piping manually or by machine, utilizing templates/sketches and packing piping to avoid contortion.
    6. Knowledge of P-1 and Level 1 piping systems.
    7. Ability to hydrostatic test piping systems.
    8. Ability to fit and install mechanically attached fittings.
    9. Ability to thread piping and to tap holes to proper sizes.
    10. Ability to prep piping for welding using grinders or beveling machines and know/understand different types of bevels. Fit/install backing rings, E.B. rings.
    11. Install pipe hangers/supports IAW applicable hanger drawings.
    12. Knowledge of various types of pipe and fitting materials and the proper material application in regards to piping system requirements. Knowledge of MIL-STD-777 (the various types of pipe and fitting material and the proper material application in regards to piping system requirements.)
    13. Knowledge of valve types and properly packing of valves.
    14. Ability to properly fit flanged joints to include proper gaskets and fasteners.
    15. Knowledge of hot work.
    16. Ability to set up and perform hot water flushing on sil-braze piping systems.
    17. Knowledge of bolting requirements, i.e., various material types/requirements for flange bolting.

JOURNEYPERSON 3 (Pipefitter)

  1. Read and interpret blue prints/sketches and install all piping systems with limited supervision.
  2. Perform shop prefab on piping systems using sketches/templates developed from blue prints and ship check.
  3. Know and understands tag out procedures for piping systems using sketches templates developed from blue prints prior to working on ships piping system. Be able to understand tagging out of systems safe for work IAW work authorization form (WAF).
  4. Knowledgeable on pipe bending and able to bend piping manually or by machine (excluding mandrel type) using templates and sketches and packing pipe where required to avoid contortion.
  5. Knowledge of P-1 and Level I piping systems.
  6. Ability to hydrostatic test piping systems using approved hydro procedures.
  7. Ability to fit and install mechanically attached fittings.
  8. Ability to thread piping and to tap holes to proper sizes.
  9. Ability to prep piping for welding using grinders or beveling machines and know/understand different types of bevels. Fit/install backing rings, E.B rings.
  10. Install pipe hangers/supports IAW applicable hanger drawings.
  11. Knowledge of various types of pipe and fitting materials and the proper material application in regards to piping system requirements. Knowledge of MIL-STD-777 (the various types of pipe and fitting material and the proper material application in regards to piping system requirements.)
  12. Knowledge of various types of pipe and fitting materials and the proper material application in regards to piping system requirements.
  13. Ability to properly fit flanged joints to include proper gaskets and fasteners.
  14. Knowledge of hot work.
  15. Ability to set up and perform hot water flushing on sil-braze piping systems.
  16. Be able to sil-braze. (Grade 3)

JOURNEYPERSON 2 (Pipefitter)

  1. Read and interpret blue prints and sketches and install most piping systems with some direct supervision.
  2. Perform shop prefab on piping systems by targeting removed assys
  3. Know and understands tag out procedures for piping systems prior to working on these systems.
  4. Knowledgeable on pipe bending making minor bends using crank style or hand bends.
  5. Able to work P-1 piping systems using weld joint identification with some direct supervision.
  6. Ability to identify Level 1 systems.
  7. Ability to hydrostatic test piping systems using approved hydro procedures.
  8. Ability to fit and install mechanically attached fittings.
  9. Ability to thread piping and to tap holes to proper size.
  10. Ability to bevel butt weld piping prior to fit up using grinders.
  11. Install pipe hangers and supports IAW applicable drawings.
  12. Knowledge of various types of piping and fittings.
  13. Knowledge of valve types and properly packing of valves.
  14. Ability to properly fit flanges joints to include proper gaskets and fasteners.
  15. Knowledge of hot work procedures and requirements.
  16. Ability to set-up and perform minor hot water flushing on brazed piping system.

JOURNEYPERSON 1 (Pipefitter)

  1. Read and interpret simple blueprints and handle minor piping installations.
  2. Know and understand tag out procedures for piping systems prior to working on these systems.
  3. Ability to hydrostatic test piping systems using approved hydro procedures.
  4. Ability to thread piping and tap holes to proper sizes.
  5. Ability to bevel butt weld piping prior to fit up using grinders.
  6. Install pipe hangers.
  7. Knowledge of various types of piping and fittings.
  8. Ability to properly fit flanged joints.
  9. Knowledge of hot work procedures and requirements.

Visual Requirements: Must be able to pass a Standard Jaegers Test chart for near vision acuity reading J1 letters or equivalent with or without corrective aids and pass a color vision test using Ishiharas Tests for Color Deficiency.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to shop supervisor. This position develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other Pipefitters and supports a team approach in the pursuit of common company goals.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assures that tank/compartment has an updated safe for hot work ticket and that requirements of the ticket have been met. (Example: ventilation, lighting, safety equipment etc.).
  • Assures that conditions of the tank/compartment have not changed since the ticket was written. (Example: fuel run back, unsafe working conditions, etc.).
  • Assures that a Work Authorization Form (WAF) ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished, no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at location of repairs.
  • Assures that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (Example: special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc).
  • Assures that you are trained or qualified for the work you are assigned to do (Example: JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs and etc.).
  • Assures that General Dynamics-NASSCOs Safety Procedures, including testing, are utilized for all torch work.
  • Assures that you and personnel working under your direction are working as safely and as productively as possible maintaining quality control at all times.
  • Assures that a 30 minute cool down period has been accomplished in hot work areas.
  • Assures that fire watches are assigned and maintained in the proper position.
  • Assures that the job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
  • Identify pipe class and material fittings.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Responsible for effective, efficient and safe accomplishment of all assigned tasks.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT ISSUE

UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job. Weekend work and/or extended hours may be required. Must be able to access all work locations, including government and private shipyards and/or vessels.
